Hear from two high school students who put into action their desire to ignite a passion for STEM in younger students. Kate is one of six girls who created Glenview’s Got STEAM - a program whose mission it is to inspire girls to develop confidence in STEAM fields and endeavors. The curriculum emphasizes subjects involving math and physics where females are traditionally underrepresented. In its first year the project was featured in the Chicago Tribune and every workshop hit overflowing capacity. Nicholas and a friend developed CS Upstart, a week-long, half-day camp designed for middle school students to promote an interest in computer science and tech careers while expanding on the core STEM concepts from their other classes. Students learn fundamentals of web development (HTML, CSS and Javascript) and entry-level robotics and engineering. These pioneers are providing inspiration and opportunities to their own generation, reshaping how we think about traditional education.
