A Bicycle for the Mind: How Technology Can Empower All Learners for Success
The late Steve Jobs once said that “a computer is like a bicycle for the mind.” Dr. Luis Perez has experienced first hand the power of technology as a tool for empowerment that levels the playing field and allows every learner to realize their full potential. In addition to sharing his personal journey as a learner who has benefited from advancements in technology, in this talk Luis will share some insights from the learning sciences that challenge all educators to think differently about ability and disability in order to create inclusive environments where all learners can find their own “adjustable seats for learning.”

Lead From Where You Are
“I’m just...It’s a phrase we hear all the time. I’m just a teacher, I’m just an assistant principal, I’m just a tech director, I’m just a custodian….the list goes on and on and is always followed by reasons something CAN’T happen. Leadership is not a title, it’s an action...and it starts from within. Identifying leadership traits in yourself changes your mindset when thinking about leading those around you. Part of our responsibilities as leaders is to identify leadership traits in others. We need to be better talent scouts in our schools. The opportunities are endless for those who choose to lead...it’s our job to find those traits, focus our efforts on growth opportunities, and foster an environment where everyone has a chance to lead.

Designing Learning Spaces for the STEM Mindset
Growing the STEM mindset requires modern learning spaces. As we look to craft STEM curriculum and instruction to prepare our students for college and careers, it is essential that they have an opportunity to learn in spaces that support this mindset. The tradition of desks and rows with a teacher directed classroom is inhibiting our progress to address the needs of all students. This presentation allows teachers and leaders to see best practices based on previous district success and brain research. Designing excellent learning spaces for STEM isn’t about decorating, but they are about having conversations about purpose and intentionality. Participants will leave with a variety of hacks and ideas that they can use to transform their classrooms and set in motion new STEM mindset for all students.

Trends in national jobs data, workforce income trend data, college completion and related student loan debt data as well as degreed student underemployment data have to be informing our career and college counseling programs right now. The good news is that there are more sophisticated tools available today to help students, staff and parents understand both where the jobs are, what those jobs are likely to pay, and which training paths make the most sense from a "return on investment" perspective, which is the context from which schools have to begin shaping their career and college advisement programs if we want to improve outcomes after high school.

Turn Evidence into Outcomes: How to Drive Student Achievement Through Data-Led Decisions
It is no secret that the education landscape has seen a substantial influx of digital learning technologies over the past few years. The digitization of classrooms and the increased adoption of edtech products are not only supposed to modernize 21st century classrooms but also increase equity, while enhancing and personalizing learning for all students. Despite the immense amount of time, energy and money invested in edtech implementation however, there is a great deficiency in research and tools that examine the utilization and effectiveness of edtech products. Join a K-12 district leader as she illustrates how her district is using a rapid-cycle evaluation (RCE) tool to collect and analyze data and discusses how to use evidence to inform important decisions that improve student outcomes. This session is perfect for anyone who can benefit from making evidence-based decisions in educational settings, including educators, administrators and district leaders.

Culturally Responsive Teaching & Global Awareness in a Pre-K - 2nd Classroom
I will discuss how I increase global awareness and culturally responsive teaching in my kindergarten classroom through the use of technology and play. Culturally responsive teaching can impact learning and brain function. I use powerful pictures of kids from around the world to have powerful discussions during morning meeting. This allows me to implement culturally responsive teaching while allowing the students practice their language skills. I also teach my students about diverse world changers through a variety of books and videos. They completed a S.O.L.E. (Student Organized Learning Environment) project where students used technology such as Pebble Go and Epic! to choose which world changer they would like to further research. This project engaged students through choice and allowed them to be independent with technology in their learning. I will discuss how I incorporate global awareness through play and STEAM

A Good Place To Start: The Beginning with How to Use Tech
In this world of a variety of tools, apps, and programs, it can be difficult to know where to begin for how to approach an audience when sharing a tool. The best place to start can actually be the very beginning with how the tool works. Sample tutorials for a variety of G Suite apps will be demonstrated in this session with step by step procedures. The process by which one can create a tutorial for one’s own school district will be shared as a conclusion to this session.

Igniting Passion and Resilience in your Students Through STEAM
How can you motivate students and then guide them in the right direction while inventing to solve a problem and build confidence and resilience in your student?  Students need to be led to a project they are passionate about and will push the boundaries of their knowledge.  Motivate, instill good collaboration skills and problem-solving through the ideas that will be introduced.  Get students inventing while covering curriculum and learning new skills and emphasizing the importance of failure and grit!

The not so secret life of students: digital privacy issues for today’s youth
Are we teaching students about Big Data on a broad enough scope?  Do our students know how their data can be collected and shared with others?  A quick overview of the topic and some questions to ask ourselves as educators.

Will Technology Make Teachers Obsolete?
In an age where students can access any content from anywhere at any time, how can we justify teaching it? What is the role of a educator in the digital age? Consider the ed tech that has changed how students learn. Reflect on why teachers are still necessary and how teaching can change to prepare students in the 21st century.

Compassionate Leadership: Leading with a Tech Mind and Heart
As a supervisor, manager, director or team member, there are many management styles and approaches that are used to lead teams and organizations. Technology-based teams are unique and can be challenging to lead given the variety of areas that serve client needs. Leadership with diverse teams requires a unique blend of desire, openness to learning, self-awareness and compassion. During this active engagement workshop session, participants will evaluate/identify their current technology management approach, review the principles of compassionate leadership with a lean to diverse tech teams, learn techniques to integrate compassionate leadership in to their day-to-day work and develop a team development strategy with a focus on: 1) learning; 2) standards; 3) bulldozing barriers; 4) leveraging influence; 5) fueling passion and reinforcing the value of a team.

You may have even learned the process at a workshop or conference session (perhaps involving building something with foil and popsicle sticks). But how does one actually use design thinking in education? Believing this process is an important, future-ready skill for our students, we set a goal this year of implementing design thinking throughout our entire K-12 school, from student projects, to teacher professional development, to redesigning learning spaces. Come hear about our approach and how our students are benefitting from it (and yes, foil and popsicle sticks are still involved!).

Have you ever been asked to approve an initiative and wished you had a simple and reliable way to know if it would succeed or not? Do you lose sleep because you know that the stakes are too great and the price for failure is too high to be making poorly informed decisions?
The good news is that there are known and proven criteria that can be applied to and used during the decision making process. At this session we will share what those criteria are and we will provide you with tools and resources you can use to help make better decisions and quickly determine if a proposed initiative has a chance of succeeding.

Education Leadership in The Age of Google
Education leaders often try to apply principles of business leadership in schools… but what works best in business is rapidly changing - and the needs of schools are unique and varied. How can school leaders adapt to implement the best of what’s working for leaders in other fields - and make the most of it in the context of an educational institution? How can teacher leaders, principals, and superintendents learn from the success of high functioning collaborative organizations like Google and Facebook?

This session explores answers to these questions, with anecdotes, examples, and data collected from the facilitator’s own work with these organizations - and with innovative schools around the world. This is supported by additional research from experts like Jeff Jarvis, Lazlo Boch, and Eric Schmit - and from leaders as varied as George Washington, Carter Cast, and Brene Brown. The session’s prompt and discussion format allows participants to process their own learning, with many resources available for follow up and action after the event.

Not Either or But and: Mixing Realities for Integrating Topics
Virtual reality, electronics and computer aided design + manufacturing are frequently choices for discrete, usually disconnected, learning units or classes. In this workshop, we will expose participants to a tested case study project (implemented at multiple scopes, with multiple schools during the 2017-2019 school years) which connect all three learning areas for mixed-reality, design-oriented, project-based learning. Participants in the workshop will exercise their project design muscles learning how to use our project's technology framework to scaffold new narratives for unique mixed reality projects. In addition to developing one's understanding of how these emerging technologies + practices can effectively relate to each other for rich learning engagements, the workshop will demonstrate the use of tighter constraints for the the production of more open ended student solutions.

Web Technologies: HTML, CSS and JavaScript
To someone who's never coded before, the concept of creating a website from scratch -- layout, design, and all -- can seem really intimidating. But anyone can learn to code, just like anyone can learn a new language. The goal of this workshop is to go over the basics of HTML, CSS, and one of the most common programming languages, JavaScript. We will explore the online resources to learn these technologies.

NOTE: Participants should have notepad++ (or any other text editor) and the Internet connection for this session. Notepad++ is a free download (https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.6.3.html).
We can download this during the session too if they have administrative privileges on their computers.

How Google plays "Where's Waldo" for me every morning; Automating student lists with Google Sheets
Every school day, one of the office professionals in my school of 1800 students sends me and my colleagues a list of students we need to check against our classroom roster to make sure someone isn't at school today who isn't supposed to be. This means that every day we each spend two to three minutes at the end of the year (or ten to fifteen minutes at the beginning), trying to determine if our Waldo is hiding on that list. Not anymore, with some help from one of those great office professionals I've automated that daily task and just want to share my efforts with anyone who wants to knock out some of the drudgery of teaching. If you join me, you will get a chance to take a look at how Google Sheets can do a lot of work that no one I know enjoys.

Refactoring Instruction: Thinking Like an Engineer in the Language Arts Classroom
Code literacy has rapidly become the single most sought after skill a prospective employee can bring into the workforce, and yet it is simply not taught in most schools, often because the instructors themselves are not code literate. Without this basic literacy, we face an ever widening opportunity gap that will leave behind female, minority, and low income students. The solution is nonetheless within reach for all of us, regardless of our technical skills: teach our students to think like a coder. In this session, Blake and Carrie will show you how to adapt your language and instruction to lay the foundation for critical thinking skills central to engineering applications for mobile and web platforms. They will arm you with simple logical constructions to shift your thinking. They will dazzle you with Shakespeare rewritten in simple, elegant code. They will even teach you a little Python so that you, too, can spin poetry from punctuation. Whether you are a competent coder or code illiterate, there is a place for you at the table. Please bring your computer or tablet.

Short- and Long-Term Budgeting for Digital Learning
Strategic short- and long-term budgeting is essential as districts and schools continue to make investments in bandwidth, networking, devices, and digital instructional materials to support effective digital learning. Districts are often challenged financially when it comes to implementing technology initiatives and programs, they should also consider creative funding for the implementation of digital learning. Cost savings can take place when technology based tools and resources are not viewed as additional costs but as an opportunity to shift funding to support learning in the digital age. Learn about zero-based budgeting, total cost of ownership, value of investment, and potential national, state, and local funding sources.
