Do We Need More Ed Tech or Do We Need More Training?
While blended learning offers great promise, there are no ‘silver bullets’ when it comes to adding technology in education. Change comes not from implementing technology but from helping all stakeholders use that tech to leverage educational change instead of the 'domestication' of the technology to outdated practice. This help comes in the for of ongoing, content and grade level specific training, and providing staff with the time and resources need to adapt to the new possibilities opened by educational technology and blended learning. Implementation is not just showing teachers how to use technology, rather training them to teach with it. This session will briefly look at the body of research on educational technology implementation, and the training requirements of ESSA. This will be followed a discussion on the practical considerations for planning effective training for staff, students, and parents when implementing educational technology.

Building Deeper Connections to the Natural World Through Video Technolog
At Shedd Aquarium, we’ve been exploring the use of video technology to help our learners connect to content, the natural world, and each other. Learners have immersed themselves in 360 videos and felt like they were SCUBA diving among sharks and in our exhibits. Families and

friends were able to feel like they were out in the field with our teen field program participants. Throughout a week-long program, students used video as a story-telling tool to document their experiences, and then shared those stories with their loved ones. These experiences were integrated into our program plans and directly connected to our outcomes. In this participate and share session, come experience these moments for yourself using various VR headsets. We’ll share and demonstrate how you can help your students connect and reflect on their learning with digital tools and how you can use the content they create to evaluate learning outcomes. Turn Evidence into Outcomes: How to Drive Student Achievement Through Data-Led Decisions
It is no secret that the education landscape has seen a substantial influx of digital learning technologies over the past few years. The digitization of classrooms and the increased adoption of edtech products are not only supposed to modernize 21st century classrooms but also increase equity, while enhancing and personalizing learning for all students. Despite the immense amount of time, energy and money invested in edtech implementation however, there is a great deficiency in research and tools that examine the utilization and effectiveness of edtech products. Join a K-12 district leader as she illustrates how her district is using a rapid-cycle evaluation (RCE) tool to collect and analyze data and discusses how to use evidence to inform important decisions that improve student outcomes. This session is perfect for anyone who can benefit from making evidence-based decisions in educational settings, including educators, administrators and district leaders.

Changing Your Viewpoint: Student-Informed Design and Student Usability Studies
We conducted a usability study in late 2016 of our library’s online resource portal and were stunned by the results. Features and designs that were believed to be student-friendly were actually overlooked or distracting. We conducted a second usability study in early 2018 of our library's new online resource discovery system and again found that design features that we assumed would support student learning were confusing to users or entirely ignored by them.

By observing how students interacted with our digital resources and soliciting their honest feedback, we improved the user experience and lessened cognitive burdens on novice researchers and have improved our instructional support and materials for students using our digital resources.

Find out how to conduct a usability study utilizing screencasts to record and analyze student interactions with your school's online resources and by employing reliable and effective user rating tools.

How Google plays "Where's Waldo" for me every morning; Automating student lists with Google Sheets
Every school day, one of the office professionals in my school of 1800 students sends me and my colleagues a list of students we need to check against our classroom roster to make sure someone isn't at school today who isn't supposed to be. This means that every day we each spend two to three minutes at the end of the year (or ten to fifteen minutes at the beginning), trying to determine if our Waldo is hiding on that list. Not anymore, with some help from one of those great office professionals I've automated that daily task and just want to share my efforts with anyone who wants to knock out some of the drudgery of teaching. If you join me, you will get a chance to take a look at how Google Sheets can do a lot of work that no one I know enjoys.

Let Google Be Your Receptionist!
Teaching would be such much easier if we all had receptionists! What if you had someone who would reply to emails for you, keep track of your appointments, remind you about tasks, or pull up the exact information you needed, when you needed it? Google can automate all of that! This session does not include the word "rigor" or "engagement", it gives teachers (and admin) the tools to get our day-to-day workload off of our plates so that we can focus on what really matters, the students in front of us. Free up your "mental bandwidth", with free tools you already have access to!
