Yonty Friesem is an Assistant Professor of communicaiton and civic media and the graduate program director in the Communication Department at Columbia College Chicago. He provides professional development for media educators as his role as the Associate Director of the Media Education Lab. His work and research in media literacy focus on the opportunities to improve social and emotional skills of students in formal and informal settings using production as a civic media project-based learning. For his dissertation work, he followed eight elementary teachers who implemented media production in their daily teaching. Yonty's current work in focusing on the evaluation of youth media initiative through his media production hive model in Northern New Mexico. In addition to his scholarship and teaching, Yonty is an award-winning film producer. He produced six academic conferences, including the 2014 International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies. This year, he serves as the program chair of the National Association for Media Literacy Education in Washington DC. He received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Rhode Island and MA in Leadership and Policy in Education from Tel-Aviv University.
